Hotwire Unveils Top Five "Sleeper Cities" for Labor Day Weekend
Experts Point Travelers to Alternative Deal Destinations That Offer Better Value and Comparable Experiences vs. the Top Five High-Demand Cities

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the top five most popular destinations that travelers are visiting this coming Labor Day weekend, along with alternatives for each city that can be had at bargain prices. Well-known cities continue to be in high demand for the holiday. While these destinations are renowned for their wealth of activities, their popularity naturally leads to higher prices. Luckily, the experts at Hotwire have also compiled a list of "sleeper city" recommendations for the long weekend that are sure to provide as much fun and entertainment as the most popular destinations, but without the higher price tags.

"Though many travelers are set on visiting the always-popular cities that top our list, we also wanted people to know that they can experience a great Labor Day Weekend without worrying about the higher costs that come with some of these in-demand destinations," said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, vice president of the Hotwire Group. "Our selection of Labor Day weekend 'sleeper cities' can go toe-to-toe with all of the big cities that top our list, so travelers can still have an unforgettable end-of-summer getaway without the holiday crowds or steep prices."

The top five most popular and alternative Labor Day weekend destinations and average prices above are based on hotel bookings made on between June 15 and August 5, 2013 for stays between August 30 and September 2, 2013.

Chicago maintains its position as one of the top three most booked cities from the 2012 list, but travelers looking to save money should also consider Indianapolis for a holiday getaway. With a vacation to the bustling capital of Indiana, visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture at the wide array of major festivals that offer live acoustic musical performances, vintage Americana, art shopping and more. One such event is the three-day WARMfest 2013 taking place in Broad Ripple Park which features performances from over 100 musical artists.

Toronto and Reno are two locales that can offer comparable experiences to the second and third most popular cities on the list, New York and Las Vegas. Like New York City, Toronto offers a "big city" experience with an annual Labor Day Parade that runs southwest across the city, as well as an international airshow over Lake Ontario. Meanwhile, folks yearning for the action of Las Vegas should consider heading to Reno for a similar adventure. Also be sure to take in the beauty of nearby Lake Tahoe that boasts a Labor Day fireworks display that brings together thousands of people each year.

Wrapping up the list of the most popular Labor Day destinations are Boston and Atlanta. While it may not be a city far from people's minds, Washington, D.C. isn't nearly as popular as Boston for the holiday, even though it hosts similarly great history and activities like the annual Labor Day concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, where the National Symphony Orchestra performs free to the public on Sunday. Then on Monday, travelers can soak up the annual Olde Towne Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade that takes over the streets with music, horses, balloons and more. Lastly, Atlanta may be known for things like its Southern culture and its great music scene, but St. Louis is full of a charm all its own. The Gateway to the West has a broad musical offering over the holiday weekend from regional acts like Pepperland and Vaski, as well as activities like the Big Muddy Blues Festival.
