"As with our airline product, Hotwire will be the one place people know they can always find a great deal," said Karl Peterson, Hotwire's President and CEO. "By partnering with leading players in the hotel industry, and using our simple and unique model, we are changing the way travel is sold online - giving people a more trusted and hassle-free way to buy travel and save money."
Hotels use Hotwire as a distribution channel to sell inventory that would otherwise go unsold. By allowing the specific hotel to remain anonymous during the pricing process, Hotwire helps generate incremental demand and permits the hotels to discount more aggressively than they can in their traditional distribution channels. Hotwire will have great discounts for last-minute leisure travelers as well as those who plan ahead.
Hotwire customers will find a hotel by first selecting from more than 130 neighborhoods in 25 major cities. Additional cities and neighborhoods will be added over the next year. Hotels are classified in 5 star levels, based on services and amenities. When a customer chooses their desired neighborhood and enters the dates they wish to stay, they are quoted one low rate for each star level available and given one hour to purchase the room from Hotwire.
Unlike other sites, Hotwire customers are not locked into a commitment to purchase or asked to submit their credit card before they know exactly how much their purchase will cost. By asking people to be flexible (Hotwire reservations are non-changeable and non-refundable) Hotwire customers can save a significant amount of money. Hotwire believes that a great trip starts with a great deal, so the company offers only recognized brands with none of the usual hassles.
Hotwire launched in October 2000, offering an affordable and easy way for the leisure traveler to purchase travel online with trusted brands. Hotwire currently offers airline tickets, with founding airline partners American, America West, Continental, Northwest, United, and U.S. Airways - ensuring customers will travel on a quality airline every time. Hotwire will expand its services to include hotels in late 2000, and rental cars and international travel in early 2001. Hotwire was established in 1999 in San Francisco, Calif., with an initial $75 million investment from Texas Pacific Group and its founding airline partners.
